Everything about The Treaty Of Edinburgh totally explained
The
Treaty of Edinburgh was a
treaty drawn up in
1560 by the
Parliament of Scotland in an attempt to formally end the
Auld Alliance with
France. However it wasn't
ratified by
Mary I of Scotland, the reigning monarch at the time, despite considerable pressure upon her to do so over the period until 1587. Even so it had the intended effect of the withdrawal of French troops from
Scotland at the time, and the eventual fall of the
Roman Catholic Church in Scotland. A major event involved in the lead-up to the treaty was the
Siege of Leith, when French troops fortified the port of
Leith. Remains of an
artillery fort involved in the siege were found, in
2006, in
Edinburgh's
Pilrig Park, in the
Pilrig area of the city.
